Our History
Reliable Tank Line was founded in 1934—at the height of the Great Depression—as a bold solution to the high cost of fuel transportation. At that time, Quality Oil Company relied on rail shipments from Wilmington, North Carolina, to bring petroleum products inland. While effective, this method proved costly and inefficient.
Recognizing an opportunity, Quality Oil launched its own transport operation, leveraging trucks to gain greater control over delivery and cost. This initiative quickly proved successful, reducing expenses and paving the way for long-term growth.
As demand grew, so did the scope of operations. What began as an internal distribution arm evolved into a full-service carrier serving customers across the Southeast. In 1984, the company was renamed Reliable Tank Line to better reflect its expanding role as a common carrier.
Today, Reliable operates across Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, and beyond—delivering fuel safely, efficiently, and with a commitment to excellence that spans generations. Under the leadership of an experienced executive team, we remain grounded in our core values while embracing the innovations that drive our industry forward.

I came to RTL with a year of “experience” hauling gas from another petroleum transport company. It actually was a lack of experience; I was trained to read a sheet of paper and match it to a computer screen with ONE customer. At RTL I have truly been trained to use problem solving skills to evaluate a load, product, or the customer’s needs. I learned enough to become a trainer, and now I train drivers to evaluate every decision that they make to ensure it’s the RIGHT thing to do. I emphasize safety, efficiency, and most of all, common sense before pushing any buttons or opening any valves. These are the things that I have learned at RTL and the things that I hope to pass down.
